Egg Egg Egg, we are so happy! Because in Venlo it is literally ‘eating good eggs’. And not just at Easter! Eggs are loved here all year round and can be found on almost every menu. How do you prefer to eat your egg? In this blog I have listed all the variations for you and I will tell you where you can eat them.
Baked, boiled, poached, stirred or even fried? Do you prefer organic eggs? Do you eat your egg the Dutch way or rather American, Irish, French, Indonesian or Chinese? Read on quickly and be surprised by all these delicious egg dishes!
1. Friet-Ei
“Keep Calm and Eat a Frietei.” Have you ever heard of the frietei? By the way, not to be confused with the Groningen eierbal 😉. A frietei is a boiled egg with vegetarian curry ragout in a crispy jacket – a phenomenon in Venlo and the surrounding area. This legendary snack was invented in 1959 by Toon Scheurs of Automatiek Piccadilly – here you pull a frietei, as the name suggests, straight from the vending machine. My tip, order a frietei at Café Brouwerplaats, where you can enjoy it with a special beer! Haute cuisine? Then go to the top gastronomic Restaurant Valuas. Here you will find the luxury version with the egg yolk still soft and an extra crispy panko crust, accompanied by delicious truffle.
2. Eggs Benedict and Poached Egg
This trendy American dish has become an indispensable part of the menus in Venlo. Eggs Benedict is a poached egg with soft egg yolk, Hollandaise sauce and sweet brioche toast. This tongue-tingling taste sensation is delicious for breakfast or lunch. You can choose from all kinds of tasty variations with avocado, mushrooms, salmon, ham or bacon - often with spinach as an extra topping.
My favorite places to eat:
Café Bruxelles – just as it should be with the brioche toast a bit crispy – and plenty of variations!
Mocca – yummm with a croissant! Breakfast or lunch? The poached egg can also be found in all kinds of other dishes.
Restaurant De Werf – My luxury favorite as a starter with scallop, truffle and celeriac.
3. Egg salad
Each egg salad is characterized by the personal taste of the chef. Sometimes deliciously sweet, sometimes spicy or extra creamy! And of course freshly made is the tastiest, like at Brasserie Basiliek - where the egg salad is deliciously creamy. Also delicious at Grand Café Restaurant De Graanbeurs - with an oriental touch and a strikingly beautiful yellow color. Old-fashioned delicious? Then go for the home-made version of Bik Mik. Not only beers, you can also find an egg salad sandwich at de Klep.
Psst. Fancy an egg salad with more? Then take a good look at the menu if you see a club sandwich; egg salad often forms a tasty layer on the sandwich, like at Bij de Buren, Het Romerhuis and Grand Cafe Central (also found in their 12-uurtje).
4. Omelet
An omelette boring? No way! This golden fried egg comes in different versions. Plain - wonderfully airy. Or for example as a farmer's omelette, filled with all kinds of goodies. That way you immediately get your portion of vegetables 😉. Of course, this classic can be found on several menus. I have now tasted it myself at In den Dorstigen Haen, Milk and Cookies and Beej Benders - definitely recommended! I am also very curious about the Hangover omelette of 30ml - Spicy with Sriracha mayonnaise and chili flakes.
5. Roerei
I'm just going to flip this omelette... Okay, we're having scrambled eggs… No way - a scrambled egg is definitely not a failed omelette! It takes some expertise to not give this egg a rubbery texture or look like snotty goo. The perfect scrambled egg is actually nice and fluffy! You often get scrambled eggs with a breakfast menu, like at the Graanbeurs. Do you want scrambled eggs as a complete meal? Hemmingway serves this dish with bacon or salmon. At De Loft 23 I saw a truffle version with Brioche bread on the menu. Definitely worth a try, for me next time 😉
6. Boiled egg
Do you prefer hard or soft boiled? Sometimes you just want it nice and simple and a boiled egg is enough! There are so many different dishes with eggs that the standard boiled egg is hard to find. No worries, at Milk & Cookies you will definitely find this on the menu! With their pick & mix breakfast option, you can put together your own breakfast. I went for their breakfast board with everything on it. Tip - share together! If you want an organic egg, Stek is the place to be! Try their Good Morning Board or colorful savory waffles - delicious, organic and with a healthy twist.
7. Egg in a casserole
You don’t have to go to Paris for a French egg! This culinary egg dish is prepared using a special technique. The egg is cooked au bain-marie in a heat-resistant dish, called a ‘ramequin’ in French, or a soufflé dish. An egg next level! Unique in Venlo and somewhat hidden in the city centre, you can taste this special egg at Brasserie Rue de Bois (= Houtstraat 😉). Their version is delicious with asparagus, fresh mashed potatoes, cheese and a little buttermilk. Oeuf là là!
